James Monroe Stedman (December 27, 1815 - September 6, 1885) was an iron founder in New York City.

Stedman was born on December 27, 1815 in Suffield, Connecticut, as the son of Nathan Stedman and Belinda Stebbins. Stedman grew up in Suffield and became an iron founder by trade. He lived in the area for several years before moving to New York City in 1850, nine years after his marriage. There, he established a successful business in the southern Bronx section of New York City, and became much respected by the community in which he lived.

On September 6, 1885, Stedman died in New York City at the age of 69.

Family[]

Stedman married Esther Goodwin on June 16, 1841, after her first husband was lost at sea. The couple removed to New York City, where they lived for decades. They had no children.
